About.

The STEP Learning Collaborative is a statewide initiative dedicated to improving outcomes for individuals and families impacted by recent onset psychosis.

Established in 2020.

The STEP Learning Collaborative (formerly the Connecticut Early Psychosis Learning Health Network) is hosted by the program for Specialized Treatment Early in Psychosis (STEP). STEP is a public-academic collaboration between the Connecticut Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services and Yale University Department of Psychiatry.

Since opening its doors in 2006, STEP has been a local and national leader in early psychosis research and treatment. The program recently completed a 5 year, NIH funded, early detection campaign, known as Mindmap. The Mindmap campaign aimed to shorten the time between onset of psychosis and entry into effective treatment (the duration of untreated psychosis, or DUP) in the greater New Haven area.

In 2020, with the support of various funders (listed below), the STEP Program established the Connecticut Early Psychosis Learning Health network, now the STEP Learning Collaborative, to further the mission of improving the lives of young people impacted by early psychosis across Connecticut.

What is a 'learning collaborative'?

The STEP Learning Collaborative is a community of organizations and individuals such as: early intervention services, community clinics, mental health providers, educational institutions, youth and community organizations, first-responders, family, consumers, & advocacy groups that work together around the common goal of supporting young people with early psychosis

The STEP Learning Collaborative aims to:

-  Provide workforce development of community mental health providers to increase the capacity of early psychosis treatment across Connecticut.

-  Support
community education and outreach to promote awareness, early detection, and rapid access to care for early psychosis.

-  Educate and empower families and caregivers impacted by early psychosis  with knowledge, skills and support through workshops and virtual resources

- Better understand the needs of learning collaborative stakeholders through feedback and needs assessment

What is a 'system of care'?

A 'System of Care' is defined as, “a set of activities with a commons set of objectives” (Srihari et al., 2016)

(Srihari & Cahill, 2020)

What are 'pathways to (and through) care'?

Pathways are the routes that patients follow through the network, it is what the patient and families experience (e.g., a referral from a PCP to a specialty early psychosis clinic) (Srihari, et al., 2016)
